يحكي الفيلم عن كاليب (دوماهال جليسون)، المبرمج الشاب والبالغ من العمر 24 عامًا، والذى يعمل بإحدى شركات الانترنت الكبرى والفائز بالعديد من جوائز البرمجة حول العالم، ويتم اختياره لكي يعمل في تجربة غريبة هدفها نقل الصفات البشرية إلى الإنسان الآلي ذو الذكاء الاصطناعي، والذي يتمثل في جسد مصنوع على هيئة امرأة فاتنة وجذابة تدعى آفا (أليسيا فيكاندر).
