Let me just say I do like Kevin Smith. He is what I would consider a kindred spirit and an all-around entertaining fellow. That being said, I can not stand his movies. His earlier movies are something that can be enjoyed up to a certain age, but I thought he, being an adult and well respected entrepreneur, might churn out a decent horror film. I should have known better. The story line was horrible, vulgar, incredibly disorienting, so on and so forth. Even for someone in the audience that enjoys that type of story, it was poorly executed. The camera is here and there, and the actors (apart from the religious fanatics) were lifeless and boring. I think there needed to be an over-all spark of enthusiasm, and it just wasn't there. It looked a little thrown together and sloppy.
Man what a surprise this film was, loads of interesting characters and protagonist switching, you find yourself rooting for several characters one by one who never quite make it. Story builds nicely with enough intrigue to allow you to go with it, Parks is so convincing in this film, damn he was good, and Goodman puts in a great turn too, the WACO scene worked on so many levels and I loved the slow down reveal at the end it reminded me of "burn after reading" except that was a dire film. This film will definitely be on my watch again and again and again list.
OK, I am a Tarantino fan. I didn't expect anything of this film. Never even heard of. Thought I was going to see a horror film. How ever: Its brilliant. Good Story, good cast and excellent screen shots. The dialoques were amazing. So without expectations the film caught me instantly. 5 minutes at the most. Mr Smith might be a bit of a controversial filmmaker. But he ticked our boxes here like. I am not going to spoil anything. Just watch it. If you like films like I do (And I am not interested in goof's, famous names etc.) you will have a pleasant time... have fun
Except for the two Clerks films and maybe Dogma, Kevin Smith has proved his one of the laziest and most inconsequential directors to come out of the heyday of indie/Miramax filmmaking. This film is just god awful. Boring, not scary, no thrills, terrible acting, some of the worst writing I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through. I did not see Cop Out, but I can't imagine it was much worse than this. Why Melissa Leo would star in this is beyond me, and the guy playing the psycho preacher was fairly decent I suppose. Otherwise, it looks cheap, it feels cheap, and it is a complete waste of time you will never get back...Ever. Stay far away even on video - remember: you don't get your time back in life. CRAPOLA!
This is really a Kevin Smith movie? Solid intense action film from someone you wouldn't expect it from.
Let me preface this by saying I don't believe in God even a teeny tiny bit. I just think it's sad that people want to make to film as a hit piece against Christianity. The movie takes the very worst aspects of what some Christians believe, mixes them all together then dials it up to 11. People are acting like this movie is some sort of grand statement on society, when it's really just the paranoid ramblings of a highly prejudiced person. The world has plenty of disturbed people, and yes a few of these will be Christian, but never a whole community (at least not badly enough to go murder rampage). I think it's genuinely sad that people's view of Christianity is so antiquated that they always want to believe the worst of it.
This is probably my favourite movie of all time. It is actually brilliant! Michael Parkes delivers an exceptionally creepy cult leader under Kevin Smith. John Goodman (always good) is mesmorising. I eagey anticipate the next awesomemovie I find. Cults, terrorism, heaven... Watch the fall and Waco if you enjoyed this
Attended Kevin Smith's Denver screening of Red State. I liked it. As time passes and the more I think about it, I like it more. It is interesting that there are no heroes or good guys in the movie, which writers are taught is a necessary element in any entertaining story. Yet without one Red State still captivates, though in a dark way. I'm looking forward to watching it again when it comes out on DVD when I'll be able to use my wireless headphones to better hear all the dialog, as some characters slur words a bit, and my old abused ears need headphones for that -- and the sound system at Denver's Paramount Theater is less than stellar. Great and innovative writing/directing by Kevin Smith. Loved the very last line in the movie.
I liked this movie, even though its flaws were plain to see. First of all, it seems to suffer a kind of schizophrenia as it switches from teen comedy to teens-in-peril to horror to action-thriller, and finally (arguably) revealing itself as a satire in which those who survive are made to look foolish or misguided. While this might make the film a little messy (as many here seem to have described it) that doesn't prevent it from being compelling from start to finish. Michael Parks and John Goodman give unforgettable performances as the malevolent leader of a religious cult (who looks a bit like how you'd imagine Richard Branson's evil brother would look) and the ATF agent assigned to take him out respectively. Some of the dialogue borders on the sublime, while the situations - while admittedly outlandish - always manage to remain believable.
