I cannot guess what people see in this film. The four main actors come off like kids playing dress-up. Only Louis C.K., DeNiro, and other members of the supporting cast come out of this looking like pros at work. This might have been acceptable had the film been a comedy, but at a pace of one laugh per 20-30 minutes, it's not. Instead, it's a long, slow, unpleasant grind that mostly goes nowhere. Yes, there moments of genuine intensity, and yes, the final 15 minutes or so go quite well, but for nearly two hours of running time the only thing keeping me in the theater was the fact that my wife didn't want to leave. This film is way, way overrated; wait for the DVD so you won't feel too cheated when you give up in disgust.
This is deja vu all over again. The mainstream movie critics go ga ga (Rotten Tomatoes rating of 93 percent simply shows the never ending Lemming characteristics of movie critics). the Oscars go Ga Ga over a self indulgent, boring, basically a movie that is love with itself. Take 5 super star actors and only one, Jeremy Renner projects anything indicating there is a tad of humanity and character and personality and not somebody mouthing words. Tried to watch several times on cable TV and I cannot make it through more than 10 or 15 minutes at a time. The only bright spot is the IMDb user rating for this movies has dropped over the years and is now standing at 7.3 out of 10 so over time people woke up and recognized they had been Had by the Hollywood establishment and their media critic lackeys.
And that's something I rarely do. The only other two I can think of are "Dark City" and "Brazil". I was cringing half the time, the acting was terrible, Jennifer Lawrence looks like she had a 5 year old apply her makeup. From what I watched, this entire movie is just a sequence of narrated scenes. Also, way to overuse typical 70s music. They played like 5 different songs in the first 10 minutes. This movie's actual rating belongs at about a 3.7, not 8.2. I'm required to type more lines in order to post this review so that's what I'm doing. Nope, still not enough. Christian Bale was probably the best actor, everyone else was high school drama class awkward. One more line.
Starts with a bang - the opening scene is the only thing worth seeing in the whole film, and it goes downhill all the way from there. The music aside - and there was a peppering of some much loved golden oldies - everything about this film is second rate; I found myself wondering if this was a spoof, or an attempt at some sort of weird comedy - but, alas, nothing funny or even remotely amusing ensued throughout. And, by the way, De Niro is becoming just sad with these typecast cameos, they simply don't work any more. Avoid this film if you value your time ( I actually aborted as soon as the long-awaited "scam" was revealed), and if you want to see hustle, watch again David Mamet's Heist, or Fabian Bielinsky's Nine Queens.
Sometimes a movie that portrays another period in time can use music to positive effect. With this movie it seems that they couldn't control themselves and used as many tracks as they could get their hands on. Whilst the tracks played there was also a number of characters following a script. who knows what the story was about. It didn't seem to matters. What we got was a bunch of people running around wearing outfits that were a parody of the '70s and a movie that turned out to be a parody of a good one.
Come on!! How can anyone give this movie anything more than a 1? I agree with other reviewers - IMDBs ratings are getting to be ludicrous. I am amazed how someone can take an interesting story and butcher it!! What about the acting? Phffff!!! At least in real life 70's some of these guys were actually toked out of their skulls and could thus pass off lame scenes as powerful acting - not anymore chumps - in spite of all the fantastic special effects, makeup and cinematographic techniques that are available today - bad acting is bad acting! period! Watching this movie is like watching paint dry, and bad paint at that. They should be paying people to watch it not the other way around. Awful.
I was looking forward to this. All that critical praise, dem actors! I must admit, I didn't quite get what this movie was supposed to be. It has some comedic elements, some crime elements, and a lot of.. drama, I guess. I thought I was getting a clever heist-movie or something, and it kind of is, but the payoff comes so late, and it's not very satisfying. The acting is top notch, pretty much all over, but that's not enough. Plus, some, well at least one of the characters is really annoying. I'm a guy, so yeah, I couldn't help but notice the female eye candy. Neither Jennifer Lawrence or Amy Adams are ugly, that's for sure. As for the ladies, not that much eye candy for you in this one, I'm afraid. But human eye candy does not a great film make, so I'd say this is way overrated. Might be one of those movies you should see twice to appreciate. Or maybe know exactly what you're getting, before you watch it. But I doubt I will see it again, so I might never find out.
This movie is so boring. The story isn't interesting at all and the actors, which are very good in general like bale, cooper..., are just annoying in this movie. I didn't enjoy this movie at all.
