Daddio

It's interesting how differently people define deep conversations. This movie did not contain any. It is a movie of a young traumatised woman sitting in the back of a taxi driven by an old womanizer at least two times her age. He feels worth something when he pokes at other people's intimate wounds and gets them to open about it. He remains closed supplying tiny breadcrumbs to create an illusion of two way intimacy. He aims to position himself as a makeshift emotional crutch for strangers he then drops off. I was expecting her to pick up a wrench and commit homicide at the end. That would have increased my rating by one star.

This movie if you want to call it that that would be quite an exaggeration being as it's kind of like a play if you will is a yawn fest, I like Sean Penn, but I guess you have to be a fanboy to like this movie, for those people who are suggesting it is deep or some kind of reflection about meaning in society or the world, give me a break!, I guess it starts out okay, the basic premise, but then it gets lost in Sean Penn's diatribe, it is not deep, it is not revealing of anything insightful about human nature, it's terrible!, and yes, he does become terribly insulting and the character that is is supposed to know things, it's just trite BS, avoid at all costs!, I stopped after 30 minutes or more and there's no way you could pay me to keep watching this schmuck fest.

When I first saw the trailer, I was like I will watch this movie because I like these genre stuff (simple storyline ,low budget, ,Relatable deep conversations etc ). After watching this Movie, I mean all I can say about that the storyline is pretty streamlined but it could be better. The performance by Sean and Dakota both were top notch. I wish there was less swearing other than that the conversations were quite sincere. The bond shown in the movie kept in their heart knowing they might not meet each other ever again and their conversations remained in their heart for the rest of their lives.

After all those empty movies with silly car chases and fake looking murder mysteries a movie comes alone called Daddio, that makes you stop and think. This powerful movie is for those that are insightful, have felt pain and recognize how complicated human psyche can be. And all this happened during a cab ride in New York from the airport to the city. Who knew one can have such an emotional enlightenment and awakening in a cab. Beautifully acted by Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn and impressively written and directed by Christy Hall. A movie worth seeing if you want to see a movie that makes you feel, think and be happy you decided to go and see it.

Here is another piece of vacuous drivel passed off as entertainment. What are intended to be profound observations about the human condition, are no more than banal sublective comments from one ignorant and cynical human being to a more ignorant and cynical human being. Drama? I missed it. Oh, perhaps if you consider sexting (with the obligatory male nudity) between two clearly infantile young people to be dramatic then it sure is full of drama. The direction is by the books, but the acting is very good. However, good acting cannot save a souless narrative. Save yourself some neurons and give this a miss.

It's a random two-character encounter in a taxicab set in the 2020s in a Yellow Cab between JFK airport and mid-town Manhattan. Only three people have speaking parts; one is the guy at the airport (Marcos A. Gonzalez) assigning taxis to passengers. Girlie (Dakota Johnson) is a young computer programmer who has lived in Manhattan for nine years and is returning home from Oklahoma, where she visited her step-sister for two weeks. Clark (Sean Penn) is a world-weary, smart-mouth philosopher taxicab driver with 20 years of experience. Clark engages Girlie in a conversation to which she slowly warms. She's also in a text exchange with a man who wants to see her yet tonight because he's terribly horny. An accident ahead of them on the expressway extends the ride from 50 minutes to an hour and a half. Their conversation becomes more and more revealing until Clark finally drops Girlie off at her home. They both learn a lot about the stranger they met and about themselves. "Daddio" is a fascinating film that relies heavily on dialogue and the cinematic capture of facial expressions. Director Christy Hall does both well, though the movie could have been a tad shorter. Dakota Johnson is particularly outstanding in her reactions to Sean Penn's intrusive and macho musings. Penn is good but less likable. The twists at the end add realistic gravity and reality to the production. "Daddio" is a fine artistic effort.
