I sure learned a lot from this biographical film, and Foreman's story is like one of those fictional underdog Hollywood films, but it's true. It doesn't get much better than that. All casting and performances where excellent, especially Sullivan Jones who emulated Muhammad Ali perfectly. Even though the pacing felt a little slow at times, the 129 min runtime still flew by with the many vast sub-plots that contributed to Foreman's life story. The screenplay had great fluidity and cohesiveness to it, and was very easy to follow, albeit a little reserved. My only complaint was that I felt the action/fight sequences were filmed underwhelmingly, and could've used more dramatics and better choreography. Plus I felt they were a little too short and rushed, and the focus was more on the story than the action. I'm ok with that, because I wasn't expecting a Rocky or Creed film, but the biographical story of a legendary human being, and that's exactly what I got.
I bought my George Foreman grill from a 2nd-hand store, hoping to make some excellent grilled steaks, but the unit came without a manual. I then decided to go and watch the documentary about his life, which should have included some indication of how to use this stupid machine, but no-such-luck! I saw where this was going about half-way through the movie, but then behold, could not stop. I was MOST disappointed to not only get no information on how to use this stupid Saturday-morning-splurge-on-myself-purchase, but at no stage does he even cook a steak! Should this movie not have been at least a bit about cooking? Well, I can't take the grill back, so now I am waiting for part 2. Maybe it will have more information on how to use this useless piece of gear...
But he's probably hired for making movies (not films) in a cheap way. (Don't believe the budget mentioned) for the producers who know the masses will eat anything give to them and love it. Lowhanging fruit has never been lower than this era we live in. Movies used to be something special, especially when made about special people, or people with a story. This movie seems like it was 40% Post Production, and the rest was cheap acting, terrible dialogue like a book with 2 pages a chapter and finally very cheap cinematography. Even the boxing was so bad. And they try to fix it with post by depending on some flashy fast forward gimmicks. The clothing, the extra's all seem so plastic, so synthetic. The mantra for this director was/is probably : 'We'll fix it in post!'
I was invited to see a screener of this movie a couple of months ago. I was a little skeptical since it tells the story of how George Foreman went from angry bad guy, to a man of God. So i went in thinking it would be way too preachy since most Christian based movies tend to be, and lose a lot of people. I was pleasantly surprised. It does get a little preachy in the 2nd half of the movie but it doesn't over do it. This movie does a very good job in what it is supposed to do. I wish there were a little more details in some of the events, but it was already a 2hr long movie so i get it. I would definitely recommend this.
