While Hokum isn't a revolutionary horror movie, it is exceptionally well-made. First of all, if you expect Jack the Donkey—the trailer's "mascot"—he has very little screen time and isn't the villain. Like the director's work in Oddity, the true villain is human. McCarthy keeps his characters complex, blending flaws and goodness so everyone's actions including the villain make sense from their perspective. The horror thrives on atmosphere. The honeymoon suite feels old, dark, and dirty; being trapped alone there breeds pure paranoia. While this incredible buildup makes the final witch reveal feel slightly lacking, the chase remains thrilling. Ultimately, the scares serve as a backdrop for a story about regret, depression, and forgiveness. Enhanced by drug-induced hallucinations, the witch may be fake, but the murders and Ohm’s growth are real. He evolves from a defensive, heavily burdened protagonist into a genuinely better man.
