Thursday morning, wife asks if we can go to the movies and sends the trailer of this movie. I watch only a few seconds and made up my mind. The lightning, composition and color were more than enough to give it a go. And now, about the movie...It goes without saying that I loved the aesthetic of it. Indie, pastel colours all over the place accompanied with good looking compositions and very well paced cuts. At times, the lightning of the scenes would make very good photo. If you are more interested in the story, I will simply say that it's a funny, hopeful and magical romance story with lovely secondary roles that could have one entire movie each. If I had to add something "negative", some of the VFX leaves some room for improvement (some were spot on and would go completely unnoticed to most eyes), but that, in the end, is a matter of time and budget. So thank you to the entire team for your work :) Loved it.
First snow of summer could have followed suit to many movies in the same romance drama genere, in which we suffer as the main charcter's condition is worse daily! The film didn't do that, yet the creators managed to give you a real glimpse of how the Caro, the main female lead charcter felt along her journey, with Alexander the person she loved and how they managed to pass the days by. It doesn't tell you something crazy happens when people love each other, but it's how a person existence can ease some of the pain we face in our lives. Existence matters and being there for the ones we love always matters, and it always makes difference. I really enjoyed this movie and the acting was superb, no exaggerating, no fake tears.. each person felt the charchters and did his best to show it on screen. A pleasent to watch with your loved ones.
"First Snow Of Summer" would be best described as a romantic fairy-tale for grown-ups that combines the imaginative world of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie or Delicatessen with Wes Anderson-like cinematography and colour palette. The romantic story evolves slowly yet steadily with its pleasant gentle soundtrack and a fantastical undertone. I actually didn't mind that the whole plot was far-fetched and obviously impossible and not realistic, because from the beginning Chris Raiber, the director and screenwriter, didn't even try to convince us that this story should be taking place in the real world. I only wish we got to see some scenes that were more honest or straightforward in dialogue, because the characters mostly speak in metaphores or in a poetic manner - I would have loved to see some rawer or more naturalistic parts of the script for it would add some contrast to the whole narrative that otherwise feels a bit too uniform. But despite this I still think it is a nice spin on the romantic genre.
