(ميجيل) فتى يبلغ من العمر 12 عامًا، ولديه شغف كبير بالموسيقى حتى مع حظر عائلته لها على مدار أجيال طويلة، ويقرر زيارة المكان الذي يرقد فيه موسيقاره المفضل (إرنستو دي لا كروز) في يوم الموتى الذي يقام سنويًا في المكسيك، وينتهي به الحال في أرض الموتى، حيث يقابل أقربائه الراحلين، ويتعرف على أسرار عائلته.
