This is when CM Punk forced Jeff Hardy out of WWE. At Extreme Rules 2009, Jeff beat Edge to finally win the World Heavyweight Title. Punk cashed in his briefcase and hit Jeff with the GTS to win the title. On Smackdown, Punk said he didn’t steal it, he earned it by simply using the contract the way it was meant to be used. Jeff interrupted, saying he’s not there to complain, adding that Punk didn’t earn anything. Jeff said he cashed in on the wrong guy. Punk said everything was Jeff’s fault who called him selfish, adding that he wants his title back that night. Edge interrupted, saying he’s the one who deserves a rematch because he held that title more than both of them together. Jeff caught Edge with a cheap shot, hit Punk with the Twist of Fate and followed by the Swanton Bomb. Then Teddy Long announced Edge against Jeff for a chance at the title. Edge threw Jeff into Punk, who then attacked him, ending in a DQ. Jeff hit Edge with the Twist of Fate, Punk hit him with the GTS and Teddy announced a triple threat. They met on Raw. Jeff hit Edge with the Swanton Bomb, Punk stopped the count, threw him into the steps and retained the title. On Smackdown, Jeff said he has a title shot and Punk interrupted. He said he did everything within the rules and Jeff said he will take the title back. A week later, Vince admired Punk for who he is and everything he did. Vince told Jeff he hopes he loses on Sunday because he wouldn’t want him to represent Smackdown. Then Jeff and Rey Mysterio faced Chris Jericho and Edge with Punk as the ref in a steel cage. Jeff was looking at Punk and Edge hit him with a spear to win the match. Punk and Jeff met at The Bash, where Punk kicked the ref in the back, ending in a DQ. On Smackdown, Punk said it was an accident because his eye was injured. Teddy came out and said he granted Jeff a rematch and put him in a tag team match with Punk.
