Publisher's Summary The Instant New York Times Best Seller from the Number One New York Times Best-Selling Author of People We Meet on Vacation “Original, sparkling bright, and layered with feeling.” (Sally Thorne, author of The Hating Game) A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters. Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.  They’re polar opposites.  In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really. ©2020 Emily Henry (P)2020 Penguin Audio

I am kind of at a loss with this book. I read some of the reviews that said it was really good so I said why not. I'm a person that could listen to an entire story without hearing the F bomb. This had way too many for my liking. How come author's seem to think that everyone uses or wants to listen to it. There are so many other words you can use instead. Narration was good and for the most part it wasn't too bad.

I was looking for a rom-com from someone I had not read before. Weeks alone during isolation and wfh left me wanting a fresh story.I'm happy I chose this one.My review will be colored by my own experiences - but I laughed, and cried, and giggled, and sighed. And I recommend this book for the meet-cute, and the intropective.

Easy to listen to, nicely developed characters and well written story. The characters are well described and you feel like you get to know them. This is always the sign of a good writer.I also enjoyed the back stories and plot development which lends itself to a great novel.

The greatest cure to the bizarre mania while still being totally board during a Pandemic is a cold drink and this book, Beach Read. I connected with Mrs. Henry’s writing style in a crazy way. The writers block, the chaos and layers of the story she built around January, and the heated tension between the two main characters was the best I’ve read in a while. This book is not a typical romance book and I ADORE the way she deals with the reality of a HEA in her story. I TOTALLY recommend this book to both Women’s Fiction readers AND Romance. This is a very well written book and I spent half the time wanting to study Emily Henry’s writing style. Julia Whelan did an amazing job bringing a newer voice than I have heard jn her other performances. This book makes it to my top three of stories I’ve read in 2020.

After reading other reader reviews, I thought the story would be a little deeper...this is basically a romance novel. I couldn’t find a connection with either of the main characters, I really never cared what happened to them. I found it really hard to suspend my disbelief that these two would find themselves living right next door to each other in a tiny beachside town...really?!I should have checked to see who the narrator was before I bought the book...I can’t stand the way Julia Whalen does her male voices, it just grates on my nerves. I didn’t care for this book at all, wish I hadn’t wasted a credit.

I think I would listen to anything that Julia Whelan narrates. And I am just so thankful for the honesty in this book. Love and life are not always neatly packaged with happily ever afters, and that happiness can be found in the every day. Even as a happily married person, I can relate to the story and root for all the characters. And I LEARNED so much, including making room in my heart to understand the whole person!!!I should keep writing too! What a book!

There were a few moments where I didn't care so much for the heroine or hero (I can be picky), but, they were few and far between. I really appreciated the take on the characters and their romance, and, enjoyed hearing them in various real-world scenarios. I loved every minute of it, and, would definitely read/listen to this story again in the future.
