In 1993, Lithuanian Olympian Rimas Kurtinaitis became the first European-born import in league history, signing with the newly formed Townsville Suns and opening the door for a new era of international recruitment. Kurtinaitis averaged 24.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, quickly becoming a cult hero in Townsville and one of the league's premier scorers. His NBL career lasted just one season before he departed for Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, but his impact was lasting.
