No pun intended - and quite obvious from the beginning. Yes we do get the classical story (which I assume you are aware of, but will not go into details just in case), but our main character (heroine) is not sitting idly when we first meet her. She also is not doing chores. No she tries to get back to where she is supposed to be, without being noticed (caught). So yes, this version is a bit of an update. Do not think that this is "woke" though - it is always nice to have some extra spins on things. To get a bit of difference to other versions that exist. Acting wise this is fine - for what it is of course. Keep that in mind and be the judge if the movie is something you want to watch anyway.
I think this turned out surprisingly good for a remake. Of course the original is still a yearly must for Christmas but at least this stayed very close to the original story and the few things they changed were mostly improvements of plot points in the original that we always made fun of it that never quite worked. The scenery, production design and cinematography is stunning and almost reminded me of the Mulan remake. The acting hit the right tone without making it overly cheesy. Yes I missed the music and some of the iconic costumes of the original but at least there was a nod to the original theme in the beginning. I watched it in German while in Germany but I really wish they'd also dub it into English (or at least offer English subtitles) which the original never did so this could be released and watched in more countries. The one thing that really really bugged me was that they changed the names of the horse & the owl in the German version. I assume they kept the Norwegian names but if you dub it, you might as well change the names. In the original they have different names depending if you watch it in German or Czech.
Only the Scandinavians can to the remake ! I prefer the original but this is in the new times a god one .it is European and the pc isn't too much . The original soundtrack is the better one .
