đ„ FIGHT DESCRIPTION: Miguel Cotto was still undefeated and rapidly becoming one of New Yorkâs biggest attractions, especially inside Madison Square Garden. He had already captured the WBO junior welterweight title and looked almost unstoppable at 140 pounds. But the real moneyâand the biggest opportunitiesâwere waiting at welterweight, prompting Cotto to move up late in 2006. The transition proved smooth. Cotto halted fellow Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana, a talented but vulnerable southpaw, in five rounds, then put on a commanding performance against Germanyâs Oktay Urkal, stopping him in the 11th round in what would be Urkalâs final bout. With his crushing body work, composed and emotionless presence, and a Puerto Rican fan base eager for a new hero in the postâFĂ©lix Trinidad era, the 26-year-old Cotto entered the spotlight as a legitimate box-office force, carrying a 29-0 record with 24 knockouts. Zab Judah, meanwhile, was moving in the opposite direction. Once a world champion at both 140 and 147 pounds, Judah was still only 29 years old but already showed signs of wear. When he faced Cotto on June 9, 2007, the Brooklyn native hadnât scored a win in two years. His slide began with a stunning upset loss in January 2006 to heavy underdog Carlos Baldomir, a mandatory challenger Judah was forced to face before a planned mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather just three months later.
