Smackdown vs Raw 2010 leaned heavily into customization and player creativity. The big selling point this year was the brand new Story Designer, allowing players to create their own WWE complete with cutscenes and dialogue. These storylines (along with other creations in the game) could then get shared online, allowing players to share their creativity with other grapple fans. The problem is, once you step inside the ring, things start to feel very familiar. While there were some tweaks like a new pin system, updated Royal Rumble mechanics and minor improvements to animations, the core gameplay remained largely unchanged from SmackDown vs Raw 2009. Matches still played out in a very similar way and for many players, this ended up feeling less like a true sequel and more like a refinement of what came before. So, was SmackDown vs Raw 2010 a step forward thanks to its (admittedly brilliant) creation suite, or was it a copy of 2009 with a few new bells and whistles?
