(Not open for comms) Streamed live at: https://www.twitch.tv/hellofmira 'As I noted in my first book, calling figures “Black” when they more than likely understood themselves by family, community, or tribal names pares down their sense of self as well as the robust alliances that shaped their lives. This is perhaps even more evident in the Caribbean, which, in the post-1492 era, is the site of rapid transformation and movement of people from around the Atlantic World. Indeed, African diasporic peoples in the Caribbean did not refer to themselves as Black until the twentieth century, if they did at all. Sometimes the colonial archives are specific, especially when assessing a group’s capacity for labor or violence, but very often they refer to color or ethnicity rather than tribe or local community. Kalinago, Igbo, Kongo, Yoruba, and others become “Black” or “Negro” or “slave.” Where they are “named” in colonial records, I use those terms even though that in itself is a fraught and perilous endeavor.' -- Kim Hall, 'The Sweet Taste of Empire'
