The year was 1999. I was 20 years old, and climbing up the rankings of the Lumpinee Stadium Featherweight division. I had already dominated the Flyweight division, winning the title when I was 16, and gained the Fighter of the Year accolade the following year when I was 17. This fight was a rematch with Kochasan Singklongsee, one of the many top Thai fighters at the time unknown to the West due to the lack of international exposure. Kochasan was ranked 1 spot above me at that time in the Featherweight rankings. He was a strong and hardy fighter with heavy hands. We exchanged fast and furious strikes right from the sound of the first bell. By the 2nd round, Kochasan already had a thick coat of Vaseline on the side of his head to stop the bleeding from elbow cuts. But that did not damper his aggression. The elite fighters in those days were built of a different breed. Training bordered on sadistic. Every fighter was exceedingly hungry. Only the best could face off inside the ring of Lumpinee Stadium. In the 3rd round, I found an opening in the clinch to drag his head down, and landed a sharp knee into his chest. I did that twice in a row. Incredulously, Kochasan took the shots with hardly any grimace, and continued to fight strong. The atmosphere in the stadium was electrifying. The appreciative audience drowned the traditional sarama music with their collective “Oiiii-s” at our every strike. I won the fight by unanimous decision. Kochasan sustained 6 cuts in total on his head and face from our fight. The subsequently planned 2nd rematch did not take place. www.NamsaknoiMuaythai.com
