The former WBC junior featherweight king, fighting for only the second time in three years, overcame a dramatic late knockdown to edge out WBC featherweight champion Mark Magsayo by split decision Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas. “I have no words to describe what happened tonight,” Vargas said through an interpreter. “This is my second world title, and it’s going back to Mexico.” The fight erupted into action early at the Alamodome, with both fighters exchanging heavy punches and landing at an impressive rate. Standing 5-foot-10, Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs) eventually seized control by using his height and reach advantage to keep the fight at range, repeatedly snapping jabs and left hooks whenever Magsayo tried to close the distance. Despite having his opponent hurt, the Filipino champion was unable to fully capitalize. When the scorecards were read, two judges favored Vargas with identical scores of 115-112, while the third had it 114-113 for Magsayo, giving Vargas the split-decision victory and the WBC featherweight crown.
