🥊 FIGHT DESCRIPTION: Gervonta Davis’ left uppercut to Ryan Garcia didn’t appear to have an immediate impact. Garcia stayed upright at first and took a few steps back. Moments later, he dropped to his right knee, bringing an abrupt end to the highly anticipated lightweight clash at 1:44 of the seventh round. “I didn’t think that body shot would finish it, but when I saw his reaction, that’s when I pressed him,” Davis said. “It was a clean shot. I expected him to get back up, but I like playing mind games—when he looked at me, I stared right back as if to say, ‘Get up.’ He just shook his head ‘No.’” With the win, Davis improved to 29-0, with all but two victories coming by knockout. It also marked the first loss of Garcia’s career, who had scored knockouts in 19 of his first 23 wins. Davis had already dropped Garcia earlier in the second round with a looping left hand and spent much of the fight targeting the body. The game plan paid off for the 28-year-old from Baltimore, who is positioning himself as the next big star in boxing, following in the footsteps of Canelo Alvarez. “I’m definitely the face of boxing,” Davis declared. Garcia, the 24-year-old based in Los Angeles, found some success in the sixth round, landing two crisp right hands to Davis’ face. But in the seventh, “Tank” responded with a devastating left to the body that sent Garcia down for the second time, prompting referee Thomas Taylor to stop the fight.
