In this one I sit down with long time friend, training partner, and work colleague, Mark Timms and we go right back to the start. We talk through how he came up, from being a beginner at K-Star in Birmingham, to becoming a world champion in kickboxing, then making the move into MMA at City Kickboxing, and now working as head MMA coach at the UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai. Mark has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sport and has travelled a very unique journey to become both an accomplished fighter and well respected coach. It’s not a structured “interview” as much as it is us just going through it properly. The early days, what we were doing, why we made certain decisions, why we travelled, the time in America, Australia, China… and what we were actually chasing through all of it. Mark went from sleeping on a gym floor in Australia to fighting in front of 20,000 people on national TV in China. A lot of it is just putting context to the journey. The reasons behind fighting, the lessons you only really learn from competing, and what starts to stand out when you’ve been around high level fighters and coaches long enough. Then in the final part we start to narrow in on what actually matters. Not techniques, but the things that make the difference when the level goes up, and the stuff we both misunderstood for years. If you’re training in Muay Thai, kickboxing or MMA and feel like you’re putting the work in but something isn’t quite clicking yet, this will give you a clearer picture of what’s worth focusing on and what probably isn’t.
