Publisher's Summary Wild is a powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe - and built her back up again. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone. Strayed faced down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her. ©2012 Cheryl Strayed (P)2012 Random House

What would have made Wild better?I have not finished listening to this but after the part about the deceased mother's horse, I found myself wishing that the main character and her family was lost forever on the Pacific Crest Trail. Many of the characters, including the main one- are not likable.Has Wild turned you off from other books in this genre?yesHow could the performance have been better?Different book to read. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? Anger, I had nothing invested in the success of the main character.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you? This author might have a compelling story but it groans under the weight of cliched language, self-conscious foreshadowing and boring self-absorption. I couldn't finish it.
The only reason I read this book was because my daughter in law gave it to me, you know how family politics go. It was a delightful surprise. As a life long runner and walker, most of it being along the coast of Northern California, I was leery of how one could make a walk involving enough to fill an entire novel. So often these sorts of books are fueled by bragging rights, and spend far too many pages on how tough is the hiker, who is out there due to preferring the wild to people. (Tedium often ensues.)Cheryl Strayed (yes, she named herself) pens a story infinitely engrossing. Though the sadness surrounding her mother lasted a bit longer than was comfortable, or interesting, the rest of her story was funny and captivating, making a very satisfying read. That it's a true story made it also an inspiring tale. Her creativity and endurance with ill fitting foot wear was wondrously humorous and, well, totally awesome!
Where does Wild rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?I listen to 3-4 audiobooks a month.Sometimes its the story that keeps you listening, sometimes its the narrator. In Wild, its both. What did you like best about this story?Listening to the author's trials and tribulations, makes me want to get out there and hike the PCT, blisters and all. What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like? Her emotion and pace matches the character's emotions and the overall pace of the story. Her narration made me cry when Lady died.
If you could sum up Wild in three words, what would they be?This book really held my attention.Great writing and narration was good. This book is definately worth your time.
What disappointed you about Wild?Just so boring. Way too many things in the book that are over described. It seems like author just added words to make book longer.Hard to believe she could just up and quit heroin without physical side effects after using daily for a length of time. Now, that could havebeen detailed more. Could have been used for a lesson and hope for others with addiction. What was most disappointing about Cheryl Strayed’s story?stopped listening.Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bernadette Dunne?she was okWhat character would you cut from Wild??
Is there anything you would change about this book?Cheryl spoke a lot about her personal struggles.Wish it was more about the PCT experience. What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?Good soft voice, easy to listen to.If this book were a movie would you go see it? NopeAny additional comments? The author pours her life experiences in this book.Including some questionable behavior. It would have been better if it was less about her feelings and more about her adventure.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?Wild is an example of memoir at its best because of the emotional experience woven into the challenges of the hike.A good book for me is one that keeps me thinking about the story and/or the writing even when I've turned off my listening device. It's a book I dream about. . . one that relates to my own experience but also helps me better understand my own life. And it's a book that makes me re-examine choices or make decisions about things I'm doing or going to do.Wild does all of this. This is a book I'm compelled to encourage others to read because I want to talk about the writing, the story, and what it made me think.Bernadette Dunne does a fine job of reading the text, shifting tone to meet the moment, be it fear, enthusiasm, grief, or sexy. She was a convincing narrator.
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more? Folks who enjoyed Eat, Pray, LoveHas Wild turned you off from other books in this genre?yesWhat reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? Disliked the character, who couldn't talk about anything other than herself.Any additional comments?Couldn't finish it.
Would you consider the audio edition of Wild to be better than the print version?Haven't read print versionWould you be willing to try another book from Cheryl Strayed? Why or why not?Yes ... seems to have led an interesting lifeWhat about Bernadette Dunne???s performance did you like?Very Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?The description of putting on her backpack was hilariousAny additional comments? The book was much more about her time spent off the PCT and the people she met there than her actual hiking time , which was taken up with musings on her past and her mother's death. The title led me to assume the book would be about the author's wilderness experience on the trail itself and what she saw and felt in the mountains so I was disappointed in so much off-trail description , which was
