On February 20, 1978, Bob Backlund won the WWWF Championship at Madison Square Garden and began one of the longest title reigns in wrestling history—2,135 days of technical brilliance and unwavering integrity. He was the anchor of the company, the clean-cut hero who carried wrestling through a turbulent era. But when the business changed, Backlund refused to change with it. In 1983, Vince McMahon needed him to turn heel and lose to Hulk Hogan. Backlund said no. He wouldn't betray his character.
