Publisher's Summary "Narrator Suzy Jackson's assured, brassy tones and forceful delivery are an exceptional match for Sanderson's high-stakes, battle-driven space opera.... Jackson's gift for characterizations shines - she brings out the humor and heroism in Spensa's young classmates and friends (and the neurotic spaceship MBOT), along with the pain and perseverance of the generations that came before them. This is a high-octane futuristic narrative of hope, sacrifice, and courage, and a fast pace speaks to the rising urgency as war rages above the planet. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award." Amazing world memorable characters and a compelling world.Cant wait for more of a story that has gotten me as excited as I ever was for the Ender's Game series of books.
This is my first experience with reading Brandon Sanderson and I am impressed with his writing skills. The book is well written and the plot twists and turns. The book is fast moving with action and humor. After I started to read the book, I realized it might be called a youth book. Our protagonist is a young teenage girl that wants to be a pilot, but what fascinated me is the sentient ship with a since of humor. This is book one of a series so the characters are a work in progress.Sanderson wrote a great fun story. I will add this author to my reading list. Suzy Jackson does a great job narrating the story.Jackson is an actress and voice artist. She has won the Audie Award was nominated for the Sova’s Voice Arts Award. She was also voted the Audiofile ‘s Best Voice Award.
This book is awful. I despise the main character. An awful person. A good person 10 times better than the main character is portrayed as a nemesis of some sort. the main character is a bad, contemptible, completely self-centered person and Brandon Sanderson should be ashamed for even writing this character. Why not write an adventure story about Hitler in his teen years?
For a Brandon Sanderson book it was missing something. I cannot explain what it is.
Sadly it's a very formulaic Young Adult novel and you'll probably be able to predict everything that'll happen before the first third of the book is complete. Great if that's what you're looking for, but I expected a little more from Sanderson.
This is my favourite audio book so far. The characters are brilliantly played by Suzy Jackson. I loved the pace of this book, it never seemed slow despite its length. I'll definitely look for more work from Brandon Sanderson.
Brandon Sanderson comes back with a new series but with the same amazing style of writing that first got me hooked in the mistborn series. A perfect mix of ups and downs for the main character that always have you on the edge of your seat. Its not peacful or pretty, tragedy looms over the main character and the feelings portrayed really resonate with you. While the main character recaptures a sense of youth and imagination that i have lost in my years. Bringing me back to those days and reflecting on how it was to be a kid back in the day. Which is done amazingly well, shes just the right amount of spunky/imaginative while also showing great skill/intelligence. A strong and memorable MC is something im always dying for, Brandon Sanderson never fails to deliver. I bought this book the day it was available and suggest you get it. You won't regret it.
There is NO WAY this book deserves a 4.9 Average Review.C'mon people, do you really think this book is on par with some of the very best books you've ever read???You guys need to quit giving fives for entertainment that is ultimately forgettable. And that is exactly what this book is - FORGETTABLE.Sure, I enjoyed the story, but it utterly lacked substance.Basically all carbs and zero protein. As a favor to your fellow readers, quit giving aways 5 star reviews unless you truly feel that the book was one of the very best you've ever read. That way we can all figure out those truly amazing books, those gems that become legendary classics over time.
Some listeners referenced Craig Alanson. This story isn't even close. Ugh, the target audience is clearly for young adults. The story is sanitized and reads like a Halmark special. I knew it was going to be disappointing when the "scut" is used as a swear word. The AI character was kind of annoying and Sanderson's attempt at humor fell way short. Too much of the story line is predictable and others are unrealistic. But since it's written for kids I guess they'd buy into it. I was hoping for some elements of Alanson's Expeditionary Force but this book was a massive fail in that regard.
Childish, crazy, and absoulotely... magnificent. Spin strikes you as an incredibly unrealistic character similar to David from the reckoner series and I was a little disappointed at first however I am glad I kept listening. There where many times where I would realize I was grinning from ear to ear, and the end... I don't want to spoil anything but I might just name all my children Spen. The performance was also fantastic. I am telling all my friends to read or listen to this.
