News has broken that former heavyweight world champion Joseph Parker has failed a VADA drug test taken on the day of his fight against Fabio Wardley. The test reportedly detected benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, indicating cocaine use during fight week. Although cocaine is not considered performance enhancing, it is fully prohibited in-competition, and a failure of this type can lead to a significant suspension under BBBoC and UKAD rules. Parker is entitled to have his B-sample tested, but until then he faces considerable uncertainty about his future in the sport. His promoter has said the matter is under investigation and further comment will come only after the process is complete. The failed test adds major pressure to a difficult period for Parker, who was already coming off an 11th-round stoppage defeat to Wardley at the O2 Arena.
