At just age 24, Aly Taylor was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer after discovering a small lump in her breast during a self examination. Aly's doctor in her Louisiana hometown encouraged her to seek treatment at MD Anderson. For six months, Aly received chemotherapy. She first underwent 12 weeks of Taxol, followed by 12 weeks of Fluorouracil, Adriamycin and Cytoxan (FAC). After that, Aly underwent a bilateral mastectomy, followed by 30 radiation treatments. She then had several breast reconstruction surgeries. Now, six years after being first diagnosed, and five years being free of cancer, she traveled with her husband Josh back to MD Anderson, but no longer as a patient, now as a survivor. A breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan is a test that helps your doctor to diagnose breast cancer and other abnormalities of the breast. Breast imaging captures images of breast tissue by combining multiple imaging technologies, such as mammography (the use of x-rays), ultrasound and MRI procedures. Breast cancer survivor Julie Martin discusses the importance of yearly mammograms and being diagnosed early. After hearing that her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, Julie, who was 67, felt she was at higher risk for the disease. She contacted her doctor to request further testing. After ordering a new ultrasound, her doctor soon discovered that Julie had stage I ductal breast cancer. The first part of her treatment required a partial mastectomy. To follow up the procedure, her doctor recommended she receive proton therapy rather than conventional radiation. Proton therapy was able to precisely target Julie’s tumor while sparing nearby organs, such as her heart and lungs. Julie received proton therapy twice a day, Monday through Friday, at the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center. She was amazed by the lack of side effects.
