Publisher's Summary NOW A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor. At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting - he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd - whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself - Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined. ©2011 Patrick Ness (P)2011 Brilliance Audio, Inc.

The story was good and very relatable to anyone who has gone through the loss of a loved one.The audio version allowed it a depth (with voice acting) that probably paper back readers would miss out on.The only issue I had with it is that the metaphoric style was pretty heavy handed. You could see the ending coming a mile a way.Perhaps this is because it is young adult fiction. In any case it is a good story.
A Monster Calls is the most beautiful story of tragedy and bereavement I've read. Absolutely beautifully told.

Beautifully written, great character development and overall a great story. Short but very powerful. One of my favorites!
I can't say that I'm always interested in reading or listening to new stories, but when I saw the trailer of this book being made into a movie, it painted an image in my mind that I was really going to enjoy (I really did though) but after listening to this book, I realized, it wasn't a book for the happy fairy tale story book, it's a book about finding comfort in real life scenarios of death and dresses. (not sure if this makes sense but it is what it is.)I did cry I won't lie, but I feel like it made me want to express my own true feelings for those I hold so close to my heart.Definitely recommend buying.
This is a great way to start the healing process for a young man or woman, who has lost its love one.
