The first period of the 184-pound bout may have been scoreless, but Iowa's Jessman Smith accomplished a lot against Austen Palmer. Smith's continued aggressiveness throughout the period wore clearly Palmer down physically. In the second period, Palmer chose to start in the bottom position, and once again, Smith controlled him, riding him out for the entire period. Nonetheless, the match was scoreless heading into the final period. Smith chose to start the third period in the bottom position, and after he quickly earned an escape for a 1-0 lead, Palmer got deep on a low single-leg near the edge of the mat, but Smith fought it off and held on to his slim advantage. Smith sealed the 4-1 win with a double-leg takedown.
