Their first meeting in 2008 ended in a late stoppage win for Margarito, but controversy surrounding his hand wraps added fuel to an already intense rivalry heading into the second fight. This time, Cotto came in with a clear and disciplined strategy. From the opening bell, he controlled the fight with a sharp jab, slick footwork, and precise combinations, keeping Margarito from settling into his usual pressure.
