Publisher's Summary Now the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones - the masterpiece that became a cultural phenomenon Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister - the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind.  All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms. Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki - whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys. ©1996 George R.R. Would you try another book from George R. R. Martin and/or Roy Dotrice? The story was interesting with several plot lines. The characters were entertaining. It was on the brutal side. The author kills and mutilates characters without any thought.I did not like the end...because there is no end.It feels like the book ends in mid sentence only to continue to the next book. There is not one of the seven different plot that comes to any conclusion at all.I wanted to figuratively chuck the book through the window. It was beyond infuriating. In discussing the book with others I discovered all the books end that way. Then the author takes 5 years to write the next book. I am still angy about the ending and I dont know if I will read the next one.The reader is average at best.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Game of Thrones to be better than the print version?I didn't read the book and found the perfomance difficult to comprehend ( slurred accents and irritating voices ) - too much repetition of the same lines ( as if the book had been laid down and same lines repeated when picked up again )What do you think the narrator could have done better?I think the narrator did his best but his style is not suitable to the tale.He would probably do much better reading DickensAny additional comments?I will buy the book and read it

This book had a fantastic rating, and was recommended by a radio personality I like.I was excited about getting started.But... This book goes on and on forever. It is just a soap opera, read beautifully. All characters you care about are maimed or killed off.The first scene is your clue to this! But then it's too late. You already WASTED your two credits.Annoying characters live on forever. The sex and gore are gratuitous.I found myself listening at 2x speed, then 3x speed, then skipping some. When the first book ended, I said WHAT?He's strung me along this far, do I want more of this purgatory?Who cares who ends up on the throne? The winter is coming? Not in my lifetime!I went to Wikipedia and started reading the synopsis of each of the rest of the books. That alone was more than I wanted. It really is a soap opera. So now I have zero credits, and a book I want to completely remove from my library.I feel bad for humanity that so many people actually liked this.

If you could sum up A Game of Thrones in three words, what would they be?Thrilling, addictive and immersiveWhat was one of the most memorable moments of A Game of Thrones?Ned Stark's end.Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Roy Dotrice?Anyone else. I absolutely hated this narrator. He didn't know how to pronounce names. In fact, he pronounces Bran as "Brian," Winterfell as "Winterfall," Catelyn is pronounced multiple ways. And his mewling voice didn't match the tone of the book at all. Hated hated hated his narration. Game of Thrones deserves so much better than this. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?Yes

Listening to audiobook and can't easily pull myself away. The narrator enhances the story. He is fantastic - it's amazing how he brings out the emotions, the snideness and innocence, etc. of characters through his tone and accents. He is a true actor. The author is a gifted storyteller. Unless someone tells me otherwise, I believe this story contains kernels of historical reality - familial love and hatred and hidden loyalties that underlie the winning and losing of royal and lordly power in previous ages. I feel that I'm looking through a window into the past that is more magical and interesting than any other.

YOU WIN OR YOU DIE, THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUNDThis is simply the best book ever written. The story is exciting, unpredictable and at all times you are entertained. I have read the hard back, watched the HBO Series and will listen to the rest of the series. If you only listen to one book, it should be this one.SEVEN HELLSThis was not the best choice for narrator, but he did not ruin the book, as some others have said. He does a lot of voices, and it seems he does not always understand how they should sound based on the character. Such as giving the Hound a little boys voice. Martin's writing is so good, no one could ruin the book. Buy this, listen and some day a new recording will be made, buy that and listen to it. Even when you know what is going to happen, you are surprised.

After listening to 2/3 of the book, I realized that I did not want to hear any more of it.I could not remember one positive thing that happened, just death, cruelty, darkness.Though I don't shrink from harsh or negative things in a novel, I need the occasional good or at least mildthing to balance all the doom and gloom. Listening takes longer than reading, and I did not feel like being immersed there any longer.I wasn't overly fond of the narrator, either. I realize I am not running with the herd on this one, and the book has been popular as well as critically acclaimed.

I don't agree with the previous reviews that Roy Dotrice's narration almost ruins the book. He may not be my all time favorite reader but I enjoy listening to books when different accents and inflections are used to differentiate between characters in the story. This does make you have to listen closer sometimes but I like having the story performed. I did have trouble with some names but many are very unusual but similar like, Mallister, Lanister, Waymar, Raydar, Viserys, Daenerys, Illyrio, or Eddard instead of Edward. I did download the book in the 3 format a larger file but there is less distortion in the sound.

I felt the story was a great listen and had excellent content but the reader was really hard to get used to. His reading was way to fast and his name and place pronounciations were very muffled in accent and haste. It took me several chapters to get to find out the names of the main characters. Other than that, the book was good and could have been a great deal better with a different reader.
