Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture: Greeks Behaving Badly? The Micro-Origins of Crisis and Revival with Aristos Doxiadis. Aristos Doxiadis is an economist and entrepreneur living in Athens, Greece. In his youth, he worked on anti-poverty programs and on social and industrial policy for the European Commission and for the Greek state. Later, he managed consulting and auditing companies, and since 1995 he has worked for 'private equity' funds that invested in Greek companies. Having observed with amusement and exasperation dramatically different business cultures, he recently started publishing articles on the institutional and cultural determinants of the Greek economy. His blog is at aristosd.posterous.com. He has appeared in numerous discussions on Greek television and has written extensively about the Greek economy. He has degrees in Social Studies (Harvard) and Economics (London).
Patrick Leigh Fermor’s first travels in Greece took place before the outbreak of the Second World War, and he already spoke fluent Greek by the time he was parachuted into occupied Crete in 1942 to help the Cretan Resistance, which in May 1944 resulted in the abduction of a German general. Leigh Fermor settled in Greece in the 1960s, and lived there until his death in 2011. His books Roumeli: Travels in Northern Greece and Mani: Travels in the Southern Peloponnese are two of the best travel books in the English language. The talk is about his life and friends in Greece, and how much the country meant to him.
Professor Peter Frankopan delivered the 2016 Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture at Yale University on September 13, 2016. The annual Lecture is organized by the Hellenic Studies Program at Yale University and honors the Program’s sponsors. Professor Frankopan is a historian at Oxford University, where he is Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College, Oxford and Director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research. He works on the history of the Mediterranean, Russia, the Middle East, Persia, Central Asia, and beyond, and on relations between Christianity and Islam. He also specializes in medieval Greek literature, and translated The Alexiad for Penguin Classics (2009). He often writes for the international press, including The New York Times, The Financial Times and The Guardian and has contributed to many TV and Radio documentaries. The talk was based on his latest book The Silk Roads: A New History of the World.
