Publisher's Summary A New York Times best seller. Shari Lapena’s new thriller, Not a Happy Family, is available now! It all started at a dinner party... A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors - a twisty, roller coaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives... Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all - a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately lands on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story. Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years. What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family - a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist. ©2016 Shari Lapena (P)2016 Penguin Audio

So, I don't consider myself much of a sleuth when I read these types of books.I am typically surprised by the outcome generally. This book had promise. There was a point where the reader knew things the detective didn't know, and we enjoy a kind of dramatic foreshadowing typically reserved for theatre. However, this mystery was pretty easy to solve too early on.Add this to the fact that neither of the "couple next door" were terribly empathetic characters, or even likeable, and it's a bit of a so-so read. The narration was fine, but the narrator didn't have much to work with here so it was kind of one-note.I was mildly interested in this plot for the first half of the book, and the ending was also interesting (no spoilers), but I'm not really recommending it.
