I explain how to count up to make change in this math lesson for 2nd or 3rd grade. I (and Mathy) go through seven examples where a customer purchases some small item and gives money, and we work out the change in US money: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills. Children have opportunities to figure it out themselves by pausing the video. Counting up means that we start at the price and then count up until we reach the amount of money the customer gives. The amount we actually count up is the change. If you like the video, subscribe to my channel. :) Thanks in advance! I solve three different problems that involve finding totals and the change, using mental math. Math Mammoth Grade 3 curriculum Shopping Game Practice making a total amount using coins and bills. Practice making change with coins and bills in this online game. Several currencies are available.

I show how to write money-amounts with dollars and cents one under another and how to add them. Regrouping is very simple and happens the same way as with whole numbers. We also solve some word problems that involve not only finding a total, but also finding the change. Math Mammoth Grade 3 curriculum:

First I show you a mental math "trick" of how to quickly find what to add to any two-digit number so that the sum is 100. For example, 73 + ___ = 100. Take the ones digit, 3, and think 3 + what makes 10? That is seven. Then take the tens digit, 7, and think: 7 + what makes 9? That is two. So, the answer is 27. We then use that to figure out the change with mental math in three different shopping situations.

I go through three examples, showing how to make change by counting up. The items in these examples are fairly low-priced since this is meant for 3rd or 4th grade students. The principle of counting up is: You start with the price, and count up from that until you reach the amount the customer paid with. As I go along counting up, I draw the coins/bills needed. In the end, what I drew is the change. Math Mammoth Grade 3 Curriculum: Online practice for making change:
