On a remarkably flat pitch, Taylor batted for exactly 12 hours, facing 564 balls and scoring an unbeaten 334. He struck 32 fours and a six while dominating the Pakistani bowling attack. Taylor's monumental innings equalled Sir Donald Bradman's Australian Test record of 334. But then came one of the most remarkable decisions in cricket history. With Taylor just one run away from breaking Bradman's record and potentially challenging Brian Lara's world record of 375, Australia declared at 599 for 4. Taylor chose the chance of winning the Test over personal records. Pakistan responded brilliantly on an almost perfect batting surface. Saeed Anwar scored a magnificent 126, Ijaz Ahmed smashed 155 and Inzamam-ul-Haq made 97 as Pakistan declared on 580 for 9 — just 19 runs behind Australia. Taylor then added another 92 in Australia's second innings, finishing the match with an extraordinary aggregate of 426 runs without being dismissed.
